bet with steve bet slipWelcome to Bet With Steve, I’m Steve, you can read about me further down.  I’ve set this site up because I’ve been betting for over 30 years and unfortunately I’ve had to learn the tough lessons the hard way.

I want to pass on some of the things I’ve learned to you so that perhaps you don’t need to make the same mistakes as me and you can take more enjoyment from placing bets with bookmakers.

You will have noticed online that most sites out there with so called ‘betting advice’ are by no means independent.  They are making money out of the very bookies that they are recommending to you.  This is not the case here.  This is an independent guide based on my own real world perspectives and not because someone is paying me to do it.

I don’t have all the answers but hopefully my experience can help you avoid some of the pitfalls and get the most out of placing wagers.

Betting Basics

Before we get in to the meaty aspects of betting, markets, bet types and odds it is important to understand the basics.  Placing a bet is supposed to be fun and is designed make events that you follow more interesting.  Of course it can become not fun too and going into the bookies world with your eyes wide open is key.

Odds and Margins

When someone says ‘what are the odds of that happening’ they are talking about the true odds, as in the real world chances.  The things is bookies odds are not true odds because by default they build in a profit margin for the bookie.  This section helps you understand how odds work and whether the odds you are given are good or not.

Who is Steve?

Steve SelfieI’m Steve.

I’m a normal working bloke in my 50s who has been watching and betting on sport for as long as I can remember. I’ve always got a lot to say about both, and my wife isn’t interested in hearing it, so I started this website instead.

I have always loved sport. I follow some more than others but you would be hard pushed to find a sport I don’t have at least a passing interest in. Football, horse racing, boxing, and darts are my real passions, but I also like a bit of cricket, tennis, golf, snooker, F1 – you name it.

Like a lot of people, my first ever bet was on the Grand National. It wasn’t a real bet with a bookmaker of course, I was too young. My older brother and his mates needed a few extra people for their sweepstake, so I put my pocket money down and I only went and won. The older lads were brilliant, they all paid up, and I felt like it was Christmas day.

From that moment on, I was a bettor.

I bet on any sport these days, so long as I think there is value in it, and I always bet with my head. After several decades of sensible wagering I feel like I’ve got at least a little bit of knowledge worth passing on, so I hope you find some of this site useful.

Happy punting!
