Blimey, what a match that was!
I don’t watch a lot of Scottish football but since it was the cup final and a big derby game too I thought it might be worth tuning in for.
Talk about an understatement. It was chaos. An absolute rollercoaster of a Scottish League Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers. Great fun to watch as a neutral.
I wish I had a bet builder or something on it. I couldn’t help but think about all the wild betting markets that must have come good. It had everything – goals galore, drama, penalties, you name it.
Let’s break down this Old Firm classic that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
Celtic vs Rangers Rivalry Never Fails
The stage was set at Hampden Park for another titanic tussle between Glasgow’s bitter rivals. These Old Firm derbies never disappoint, but this cup final took things to a whole new level of madness.
From the first whistle, you could tell both sides were up for it. The intensity was off the charts – crunching tackles flying in left and right, neither team giving an inch. It had all the makings of a proper cup final slugfest.
Even as a neutral I found myself totally engrossed. Little did I know we’d end up with a full 120 minutes plus penalties.
The bookies must have been rubbing their hands with glee.
Rangers Draw First Blood

Rangers came flying out of the traps and took a shock early lead through Nedim Bajrami. You could have got some tasty odds on Rangers scoring first, given Celtic’s recent dominance in these fixtures.
The Gers looked fired up and were really taking the game to Celtic in that opening period. Their high-intensity pressing was causing all sorts of problems. I bet a few punters were eyeing up those “Rangers to win to nil” odds at the half time whistle.
Celtic Fight Back
Just when it looked like Rangers might run away with it, Celtic showed why they’re the champions. They gradually worked their way back into the game and equalised through Greg Taylor in the 56th minute.
This was the start of a 32 minute stretch in which 5 goals would be scored – that’s a goal every 6.4 minutes!
First, Daizen Maeda popped up to give Celtic the lead. At that point, you’d have been brave to bet against Celtic seeing it out. They so often find a way to grind out these big results.
But Rangers weren’t done yet. They kept battling away and got their reward when Mohamed Diomande levelled things up at 2-2.
The drama was far from over though. Nicolas Kuhn looked to have won it for Celtic late on with an 87th minute ‘winner’, only for Danilo to dramatically equalise for Rangers virtually right after the match kicked off again. 3-3 and we were heading to extra time.
Penalties Decide It
I dread to think what odds you could have got on a 3-3 scoreline after 90 minutes.
After a tense period of extra time with nor further goals, we went to the dreaded penalty shootout.
I have to say, I felt for Rangers here. They were facing a wall of their own supporters but you got the feeling they weren’t going to win it. Schmeichel kept going the right way even if he wasn’t saving them, until he did.
Kasper Schmeichel’s save from Ridvan Yilmaz proved crucial, allowing Daizen Maeda to slot home the winning penalty.
Rangers had battled hard against an undeniably better team – just look at the league table – and deserved more, but it wasn’t to be.
Have a look at the highlights – it will be 10 minutes well spent I promise you.
Rodgers’ Magic Touch
We have to give huge credit to Brendan Rodgers here. The Celtic gaffer seems to have that magic touch in cup finals. That’s his 10th trophy now as Celtic boss – a remarkable record.
Rodgers spoke afterwards about how he always prepares for these games like it’s his first, despite his vast experience. That attention to detail clearly pays off in the big moments.
You’ve got to feel for Rangers and their supporters though. To come so close in such an epic encounter must be gut-wrenching. They gave absolutely everything and on another day could easily have lifted the trophy.
Philippe Clement will be proud of the fight and spirit his team showed. They pushed Celtic all the way and contributed to a truly memorable final. Small margins decided it in the end.
Standout Performers
In a game of such quality, it’s hard to single out individuals. But a few players really caught the eye:
- Daizen Maeda – Scored in normal time and kept his cool to net the winning penalty. Ice in his veins.
- Kasper Schmeichel – Made some crucial saves and came up trumps in the shootout.
- Nicolas Kuhn – Constant threat for Celtic and took his goal brilliantly.
- Mohamed Diomande – Ran himself into the ground for Rangers and got on the scoresheet.
A Lesson for Punters

Looking back, this match was an absolute classic that showcased everything great about Scottish football.
The passion, the drama, the quality – it was all there in spades.
From a betting perspective, it was the kind of game that produces some outrageous winning slips. I can only imagine some of the accumulators and in-play bets that might have come good.
We all know a guy who puts a few quid on some far fetched combi each week, and this game just goes to show that although they are long odds for a reason, they aren’t impossible to win.
As someone who enjoys a flutter, this match was a timely reminder that anything can happen in football. Those long-shot bets that seem ridiculous pre-match? Well, games like this show why they’re worth a quid or two sometimes.
Whether it’s late goals, penalty drama, or unlikely scorelines – football has a knack for producing the unexpected.
That’s what makes it such a popular sport for betting.
