As a relative newcomer to the world of Major League Soccer (MLS), I’m only just getting to grips with the different players, clubs and their histories.
I must say though, I was absolutely buzzing to watch the 2024 MLS Cup final between LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls. Having recently caught the MLS bug and considering placing a few bets next season, this match promised to be the perfect showcase of what American soccer has to offer.
I thought we were in for an absolute goal fest after the first 30 minutes. The game lost some of that early excitement as time went on but it was still a great watch. It gave me a few things to think about for next season too.
A Tale of Two Cities: LA vs NY
The 2024 MLS Cup final was a clash of titans, pitting two of the league’s original franchises against each other in a battle for supremacy.
I wasn’t paying attention back in 2014 when these two clubs were last dominating the tables, but the match build up educated me.
LA Galaxy, the most successful club in MLS history, entered the final looking to extend their record with a sixth MLS Cup title. Their journey to the final was nothing short of remarkable, especially considering their dismal 13th-place finish in the Western Conference just a year prior.
On the other side of the pitch stood the New York Red Bulls, a team with a rich history but an empty trophy cabinet when it comes to MLS Cup victories. As the lowest seed to ever reach the final, finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference and 18th in the overall rankings during the regular season, they were very much the underdogs in this David vs Goliath encounter.
Dignity Health Sports Park Atmosphere

As the cameras panned across Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, I got a good look at the American crowd. These guys were really up for it. The football might not be as good over there as it is over here but the fans could certainly compete.
The atmosphere was electric, with the home crowd firmly behind their beloved Galaxy.
LA Galaxy’s impressive home record throughout the 2024 season (17 wins, 0 losses, and 4 draws across all competitions) certainly gave them an edge. As a potential bettor, this statistic would have definitely influenced my wager had I been placing one.
The historical significance of this match wasn’t lost on me either. It marked the first time two MLS founding members had faced off in the final since 2014, adding an extra layer of nostalgia and importance to the occasion.
Galaxy’s Blistering Start
If I had any doubts about the excitement level of MLS, they were quickly dispelled within the opening 15 minutes of the match. LA Galaxy came out of the gates like a team possessed, leaving the Red Bulls shell-shocked.
In the 9th minute, Joseph Paintsil, one of Galaxy’s high-profile winter 2024 signings, broke the deadlock with a clinical finish. As a newcomer to MLS, I was impressed by the Ghanaian winger’s composure under pressure.
Before I could catch my breath, Dejan Joveljić had doubled Galaxy’s lead in the 13th minute. His clever run and finish with the outside of his boot left me in awe. At this point, I was beginning to wonder if we were in for a rout.
Absence of Riqui Puig
One of the most poignant moments of the match came during the goal celebrations. Both Paintsil and Joveljić paid tribute to their injured teammate Riqui Puig by holding up his shirt. It was a touching gesture that highlighted the team’s unity and spirit.
The absence of Riqui Puig, who had torn his ACL in the Western Conference Final, was a significant talking point leading up to the match. From a betting point of view it was one of the only things going in the Red Bull’s favour, and I was curious to see how Galaxy would cope without their star midfielder.
To my surprise, Gastón Brugman filled Puig’s shoes admirably. His assist for Paintsil’s opener and overall control of the midfield were crucial to Galaxy’s victory. It was a masterclass in squad depth management by coach Greg Vanney.
Red Bulls Fight Back
Just as I was beginning to write off the Red Bulls, they showed why they had made it to the final against all odds. Sean Nealis’s 28th-minute volley breathed new life into the match and had me on the edge of my seat.
Interestingly, Nealis had earlier headed a free-kick against his own crossbar. His goal felt like a moment of personal redemption and a lifeline for his team.
Despite Nealis’s goal and some promising chances in the second half, including Emil Forsberg hitting the woodwork, the Red Bulls couldn’t find an equaliser. As a neutral observer, I found myself rooting for the underdogs – maybe it’s because I’m a Brit – but it wasn’t to be their day.
Tactical Masterclass: Greg Vanney’s Vision

As the match progressed, I began to understand the tactical acumen of Galaxy coach Greg Vanney. His attack-centric vision, bolstered by smart winter signings, had transformed the team from also-rans to champions in just one season.
The reported $20 million spent on Paintsil and Gabriel Pec proved to be money well spent. Their impact on the team’s fortunes was evident throughout the season and in this final.
But while the star signings grabbed the headlines, it was Galaxy’s squad depth that truly impressed me. The seamless integration of players like Brugman and Marco Reus (who came on as a substitute) showcased the strength of their roster and Vanney’s expert use of the tools at his disposal.
Record-Breaking Galaxy
As a numbers guy, the statistical achievements of this Galaxy team caught my eye. Their record of 18 goals scored in the playoffs is a testament to their attacking prowess.
Dejan Joveljić’s six playoff goals put him second on the all-time list for a single postseason. It’s the kind of stat that makes me think he could be a good bet for top scorer in future tournaments. Or potentially a goal scorer to add to an acca.
Then there is Galaxy’s unbeaten home record throughout 2024. This is the stuff of legends. It’s certainly something I’ll keep in mind when considering future bets on their home matches – you don’t ignore stats like that.
The Red Bulls’ Cinderella Story

While the focus naturally falls on the victors, I can’t help but admire the Red Bulls’ journey to the final. As the lowest seed to ever reach this stage, their run was nothing short of remarkable.
I was impressed to learn that five of Red Bulls’ starting lineup were local youth products, with only one player over 30. It’s a testament to their commitment to developing talent and bodes well for their future. A bet to make the playoffs next season? If the price is right perhaps.
Emil Forsberg’s influence on the team was evident too, even in defeat. His second-half effort that hit the post could have changed the course of the match. It’s only his first season with the Red Bulls too, so I’ll be keeping an eye on his performances next season. If he builds on such a strong start he could be another shoe in for goal scorer markets.
A New MLS Convert
As the final whistle blew and LA Galaxy celebrated their record-extending sixth MLS Cup title, I found myself thoroughly converted to the excitement of Major League Soccer.
The quality of play is definitely not the Premier League, but it’s not half fun to watch. It reminded me of watching English football a few decades ago. You know, when it was still good.
The passion of the fans and the unpredictable nature of the playoffs have all combined to create a product that’s both entertaining and potentially lucrative for savvy bettors.
From the tactical nuances of Greg Vanney’s Galaxy to the underdog spirit of the Red Bulls, this final had it all. As I look ahead to next season, I’m already making mental notes on potential bets.
One thing’s for certain: I’ll be watching MLS a lot more closely from now on, both as a fan and a potential bettor.
