The Premier League’s quality is unparalleled, but the battle to retain a coveted spot in England’s top flight is a relentless grind.
Now the 2024/25 campaign is underway, several clubs may already be finding themselves staring down the barrel of potential relegation, their top-tier status feeling like borrowed time.
In this article, I will discuss the teams most likely to face the dreaded drop, dissecting their prospects and assessing the factors that could seal their fate.
I haven’t made my bets yet, but my sights are set on a few clubs in particular.
Newly Promoted Trio Face Immediate Survival Test

History has shown that newly promoted sides often find themselves embroiled in the relegation dogfight, and the 2024/25 season is no exception.
The trio of Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton, fresh from their respective Championship triumphs, are widely tipped as the front-runners for the dreaded drop.
Leicester City
Despite their rich history in the Premier League, including the shock title triumph in 2015, Leicester City find themselves a bookmakers’ favorites for relegation this season. The departure of their Championship-winning manager, Enzo Maresca, to Chelsea has left a significant void, with Steve Cooper tasked with steadying the ship.
Additionally, despite a successful appeal there is still a small chance that a potential points deduction due to financial irregularities could prove a decisive blow to their survival hopes. It’s unlikely at this stage, but even without this setback, they have a tough task ahead of them.
Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town’s return to the Premier League after a 22-year absence is a remarkable achievement, but the harsh realities of top-flight football could quickly catch up with them.
While Kieran McKenna’s side has made some astute signings, their limited resources and lack of recent Premier League experience could see them struggle to maintain their elite status.
That said, 6 games into the season they are performing best out of the three recently promoted teams, albeit only with 4 points from 4 draws.
Southampton
Southampton’s promotion through the play-offs has reignited hopes of Premier League stability, but their subdued transfer activity has raised concerns among the faithful. Despite their recent top-flight pedigree, the Saints may find the going tough as they aim to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with once again.
Earning just a single point from their first 6 games, the people at head office must already be thinking about life back in the Championship. I can certainly see it happening.
Established Strugglers

While the newly promoted sides face an immediate baptism of fire, several established Premier League clubs find themselves in familiar territory, battling to stave off the spectre of relegation.
Everton
Despite narrowly avoiding the drop last season, Everton’s financial woes and potential further points deductions have cast a pall over their prospects. It would be a cruel blow having survived against the odds during the previous campaign.
The club will be pleased to have kept hold of key assets like Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin after rumours circulated during the transfer window. Their departure could have seen the Toffees dangerously exposed, with their Premier League status hanging by a thread, but as things stand they have a decent chance of hanging on in there.
The new ownership may be able to inject a new lease of life into the club too.
Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest’s survival last season was a hard-fought battle, and the 2024/25 campaign could prove equally arduous.
While Nuno Espírito Santo’s managerial acumen offers hope, the lack of firepower upfront and the loss of a few defensive talents over the summer could derail their aspirations of mid-table security.
They sit mid-table at this early stage in the season, but there is plenty of time for things to change.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ recent mid-table finishes belie the precariousness of their Premier League status.
The retention of their prized assets, such as Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan, could prove pivotal in their quest for survival, but a lack of attacking reinforcements could leave them vulnerable in the goal-scoring department.
They could hardly have had a worse start to the season either, winning just a single point and scoring 6 goals while conceding 16 in their first six games. They are bottom of the table at the time of writing, and it will be very difficult to claw their way back from this early disappointment.
I’m very close to putting money on Wolves to go down.
Survival Strategies: Keys to Avoiding the Drop

As the 2024/25 season unfolds, several factors could prove pivotal in determining which clubs ultimately avoid the dreaded drop to the Championship.
It seems like a redundant point, but the role of an experienced and tactically astute manager cannot be overstated in the fight for survival. Clubs like Everton, with Sean Dyche at the helm, and Nottingham Forest, under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo, could benefit from their managers’ expertise in navigating treacherous waters. Knowing how to squeeze a point out of a game or two could be the difference between staying up and the drop.
For teams battling relegation, squad depth and strategic reinforcements make all the difference. Clubs like Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers may need to dip into the transfer market to strengthen their squads and bolster their chances of survival, while those with more depth can avoid injury crisis misery and rotate to suit different tactical approaches.
The men who pull on the shirt make the real difference though. In the heat of the relegation battle, resilience and determination can be the difference between survival and relegation. Clubs that can grind out crucial points, even in the face of adversity, may find themselves navigating clear of the relegation quagmire. The teams that do that will be those full of players with a sound mentality, who never give up and fight to the final whistle.
As the 2024/25 Premier League season unfolds, the battle for survival promises to be as intense and unpredictable as ever. While the bookmakers have their favourites, the twists and turns of the campaign could throw up surprises and unexpected narratives. One thing is certain: the fight to retain a coveted spot in England’s top flight will be a relentless grind, with the stakes higher than ever for the clubs on the brink.
