As the excitement builds for the Grand National, one of the most prestigious events in the horse racing calendar, I am obviously studying the race card hard.
After careful consideration of form, trends, and insights from various sources, I have zeroed in on two horses that I believe have the potential to clinch victory: Perceval Legallois and Intense Raffles.
These are the horses I am putting my money on.
I will explain the reasons behind my selections below, examining their previous performances, training backgrounds, and the factors that could contribute to their success at Aintree.
Perceval Legallois
Perceval Legallois has been turning heads with his recent performances, particularly his victory in a big-field handicap chase at Leopardstown. This win not only showcased his stamina and agility but also highlighted his ability to compete against strong opposition. Winning in such a competitive environment suggests that he is more than capable of handling the pressures of the Grand National.
Moreover, his most recent outing, where he triumphed in a hurdle race, indicates that he is in excellent form leading up to Aintree. This combination of experiences could prove invaluable as he faces the challenging course of the Grand National.
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
The role of a trainer is key, and Gavin Cromwell’s reputation precedes him. Known for his meticulous preparation and strategic approach, Cromwell has a track record of getting horses ready for big races. His expertise in conditioning Perceval Legallois for this prestigious event adds to my confidence in this horse’s chances.
Cromwell’s ability to assess a horse’s strengths and weaknesses should ensure that Perceval Legallois is not just physically prepared but also mentally ready to tackle the unique challenges of the Grand National.
Jockey: Mark Walsh?
The anticipated partnership between Perceval Legallois and jockey Mark Walsh is another factor that strengthens my belief in this horse. Intense Raffles may not be the first name that comes to mind for many, but I believe he is a formidable contender.
Having won the Irish National last year, he has demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level. This victory not only showcases his ability to handle the demands of a tough race but also provides him with the confidence needed for Aintree.
His previous performances suggest that he has the stamina and resilience required for the Grand National, making him a horse worth considering for my bets.
Weight Advantage
One of the critical factors in the Grand National is the weight each horse carries, and Intense Raffles appears to have a favourable position.
With a weight of just 10st 10lb, he is in a prime position to compete effectively against heavier opponents. This weight advantage could play a significant role in his performance, especially in the latter stages of the race when stamina becomes crucial.

What excites me about Intense Raffles is the fact that his connections have been targeting this race for some time. This long-term strategy often pays off, as it allows for tailored training and conditioning specifically for the Grand National.

Both horses present strong cases for victory, and they mostly fit the trends that have historically influenced the Grand National.
Debuts
Notably, many past winners have made their Grand National debuts in their winning year, with a significant number of them showing excellent form in the lead-up.
Perceval Legallois fits this trend, as he is relatively fresh to the Grand National scene but has shown remarkable promise.
In contrast, while Intense Raffles will also be making his Grand National debut, he has the advantage of experience, having already competed in high-stakes races, which could prove beneficial.
Weight Considerations
Traditionally, horses carrying less weight have fared better in the Grand National. This trend is particularly relevant for Intense Raffles, who benefits from a lighter load compared to many of his competitors. The ability to maintain speed and stamina over the demanding course is often linked to weight, making this a crucial factor in my decision-making process.
And They’re Off!
With Perceval Legallois and Intense Raffles as my chosen contenders, I feel confident in my selections. Their impressive form, expert training, and strategic advantages make them worthy of my support.
At 13/1 and 11/1 respectively (at the time of writing), I feel there is some value in there too. I’ll probably stick to win bets for both, though – I’m a bit more cavalier with my wagers on the National.
I’m looking forward to watching the race this year and hope to see these horses perform to their full potential. Although I’m glad I will be watching with a pint of Guinness costing £3.50 down the pub, and not one costing £10 at Aintree!
